I am finding more and more as I discover West Sussex, the vast amount of hidden gems in this beautiful area, from the stunning venues tucked away in the rolling hills of the South Downs to the incredible architecture and building that Chichester has to offer. As I am not a local girl, it is so exciting to find all these new and wonderful places.
After strolling down West Street one Saturday afternoon, I came across a building that felt like it was from a completely different space in time.
Edes House stood before me, and I just had to find out its history, what is was used for? and how I could Utilise It for them. I had the most informative chat with the Head of Events for Edes House, Kim Wright, she gave me so much information on the interesting things they do there, and some of the history too.
Edes House is a Grade 1 Listed building and was built in 1696, the house was the first of its kind, and took 3 years to build for a gentleman called John Edes, unfortunately Mr Edes sadly died before the house was finished, but if you look closely, the family initials are etched in a led pipe outside the house!
So what do the team at Edes house do, apart from keeping this stunning house and all its contents in pristine condition? They look for ways of utilising the house to its full capacity.
Amongst being a wedding venue, product launches, hosting afternoon tea and a great filming location, there were 2 very interesting things that caught my attention, one of which is the fact they hire out the whole house for family entertainment. Middle to Upper Class families who have perhaps downsized their own house, and now don’t have the room for family ‘get togethers’ can hire this venue and ‘make it their own’ for the day. What a lovely thing to do!
The other type of event that seems to be very much on the increase is ‘Celebrations of Life’ a wake with a difference. When you think about it, who ever really knows you from the start of your life to the very end? Kim and the team at Edes House really do set the scene of the person’s life, with memory tables and memory books and videos if you choose. All the things that make you smile.
